Vegas Golden Knights vs Winnipeg Jets

After the second round of Stanley Cup playoff action, only four teams remain in the hunt for a 2018 championship. Two of those four entered this postseason with absolutely zero playoff series victories under their belt. And it’s those two — the Winnipeg Jets and the Vegas Golden Knights — who will square off in the Western Conference Finals for a spot in the Stanley Cup Final.

Neither the Jets nor the Golden Knights, who had some of the strongest regular seasons in the conference, came into the 16-team playoff picture as slouches. But neither was anticipated to be one step away from the Final, either. Winnipeg used its explosive, young offensive core, headlined by Patrik Laine and Mark Scheifele, to steamroll the Minnesota Wild and then outdo consensus Cup favorites in the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Nashville Predators. And the Golden Knights, in their inaugural NHL season, with a roster assembled less than a year ago via an expansion draft, simply dominated their way to this point behind career gems from goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

In the conference finals, they meet. With either the high-flying Tampa Bay Lightningor resilient Washington Capitals waiting on the other side, it’s up to the Jets and the Golden Knights to duke it out and represent the West.

Sadam Ali vs Jaime Munguia

HBO Sports presents another WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING card from the Empire State, this time visiting Verona, for SADAM ALI VS. JAIME MUNGUIA AND REY VARGAS VS. AZAT HOVHANNISYAN, to be seen SATURDAY, MAY 12 at 10:00 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT) from Turning Stone Resort Casino, exclusively on HBO. The HBO Sports team will call the action, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino. (photos by Ed Mulholland/HBO, Matt Beasley/Hoganphotos).

The main event is a junior middleweight title showdown, as Brooklyn’s Sadam Ali (26-1, 14 KOs) defends his crown against rising challenger Jaime Munguia (28-0, 24 KOs) from Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, in a scheduled 12-round bout. The 29-year-old Ali played spoiler at boxing legend Miguel Cotto’s retirement fight last December, and now looks to build his own legacy.

The Ali-Munguia bout won’t have to contend with the NBA Playoffs and it begins right after an ESPN Boxing event featuring Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Jorge Linares. There will be competition from the back end of Bellator 199, which will almost certainly include the event’s main event between Ryan Bader and King Mo.

Ali-Munguia will also run parallel with UFC 224’s main card on pay-per-view. The PPV’s main event (Amanda Nunes vs. Raquel Pennington) isn’t one of the promotion’s strongest. That said, Ali–who is the headliner–isn’t one of boxing’s biggest draws at this point.

Ali’s last fight peaked at over 1 million views, but that bout was against future Hall of Famer Miguel Cotto in his final fight. Munguia is a strong young fighter, but the numbers for this fight could be significantly lower.

Players Championship

The Players Championship Live is the most important event of the year on the PGA Tour schedule. The Tour, which does not operate or have any ownership in the four different majors, has blown it out at TPC Sawgrass and now we have a few decades of history with this thing. It does not fall in the same class as the majors, but it exists certainly out on its own as the biggest non-major tournament of the year. It’s created its own unique identity and thanks to a run of high-profile winners over the last 10 to 15 years, the event has only gotten stronger.

Players Championship

This year’s Players Championship begins with the strongest field since 2006. The top 50 were all here on hand and ready to tee it up, but because that would have been too easy, Paul Casey withdrew on the eve of the first round with a back injury. So we’ve got 49 of the top 50 and a loaded 144-man field which is often hailed as the best of the year.

But the reason this year’s Players has some added juice has nothing to do with one of the pros in that top 50 group. Tiger Woods is back at TPC Sawgrass for the first time in three years, ending the same drought he had at Augusta until last month. Woods doesn’t have the track record here that he does at so many places that were on his annual schedule. This is all relative as Tiger’s career really has no comparison. He’s played well enough and has a slew of top 10 and top 25s here, but there are only two wins (which anyone else would gladly take for a career). For Tiger, that’s not a lot compared to the other events he played year-in and year-out for so long.

That’s just the nature of this course and this field. There are very few players who consistently show here and there’s never been a back-to-back winner. It’s an unpredictable venue where no one single style is favored and no single player has traditionally and consistently dominated. The bombers don’t hold the advantage that they do at so many other courses.

Tiger makes his return to The Players in one of most hyped tee times this event has ever seen. Woods is always the marquee tee time on the tee sheet, no matter who he is playing with. But the Tour put him with Phil Mickelson this week. The two, despite being contemporaries, have rarely played together. Their star power was distributed to different sides of the draw for most of their careers. This week, however, they’re together and Rickie Fowler is rounding out the trio for the first 36 holes.

They tee off at 1:52 p.m. and will obviously be the focus of the Golf Channel’s opening round coverage. That will be simulcast streamed and PGA Tour Live will also have their own featured groups stream up and running. On the morning side, the superstar group of Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas will be the focus of PGA Tour Live’s featured groups streams. Those three, the last three FedExCup champs, illustrate the kind of depth that exists on the Tour right now and makes putting Phil and Tiger together easier than the old days.

Juventus vs AC Milan

Juventus will attempt to win a fourth-straight Coppa Italia when they face AC Milan in 2018’s final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Wednesday.

Juve are closing in on another Serie A title, so winning the cup would put the club on the brink of a fourth consecutive double. Manager Massimiliano Allegri has been in charge during this lengthy trophy haul, but there are doubts about the 50-year-old’s future beyond this season, amid links to the Arsenal job.

As for Milan, the Rossoneri have enjoyed something of a revival on the watch of former player Gennaro Gattuso. Winning the cup would validate his work and return Milan to winning ways after a lengthy spell out of the trophy picture.

Before then, Allegri will have to consider shuffling his squad ahead of the Bianconeri’s two remaining Serie A fixtures. Fortunately, Allegri will have most of his key players available against his old club.

Among them, towering striker Mario Mandzukic, defender Mattia DeSciglio and midfield man Stefano Sturaro all came back from injury to take part in training recently, per Calciomercato.

Madnzukic and his aerial threat will be useful against former Juventus centre-back Leonardo Bonucci. Fellow defender Alessio Romagnoli will have his hands full coping with striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Milan have their own firepower thanks to Patrick Curtone and Hakan Calhanoglu. The latter thrived during the recent 4-1 win over Hellas Verona, scoring and providing an assist, while Curtone also got on the scoresheet.
