Players Championship 2018

Webb Simpson will try and close out a massive seven-stroke lead after 54 holes at the 2018 Players Championship with what would be his first victory in five years. He has the tournament scoring record of 24 under within reach, and if the first three days are any indication, he has a pretty good chance of remaining atop the leaderboard and reaching it.

The only golfers within striking distance are Danny Lee (-12) and Dustin Johnson (-10), but they’ll both need something disastrous from Simpson on Sunday to find themselves in the mix. As a nice appetizer before the main course, though, we get a Tiger Woods-Jordan Spieth pairing that combined to shoot 14 under on Saturday. (Check out tee times for the top groups here.) One of the might have to do that by himself to have a chance for the win in Round 4 at TPC Sawgrass.

A lot has happened in the five years since Tiger Woods crushed the hopes and dreams of Sergio Garcia on the way to winning his second Players Championship. Woods has had four back surgeries, missed a few full seasons, a few half-seasons, and Sergio has bagged that elusive major championship.

But Saturday at TPC Sawgrass was a throwback performance to a more dominant era. Woods, who scuffled to make the Players cut right on the number, moved some 60 spots up the leaderboard with the round of the day. He finished with a 7-under 65 that he characterized as the highest possible score he could have posted given the way he was playing. And he’s not wrong, as it felt like this was a course-record breaking march. It could have been a 10-under 62.

The 65 is good enough for a late Sunday tee time, which is a dramatic reversal from making the cut on the number. He will play with Jordan Spieth, going off the first tee at 2:05 p.m. ET. Spieth matched Tiger with the round of the day and because they got in the house so early, a Sunday pairing was always possible. Now they will play in PGA Tour Live’s featured groups stream for the afternoon.

The two will also play their entire round in the NBC coverage window. The TV coverage will begin at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, so we’ll be up and running from the very first tee. That wasn’t the case on Saturday, as both Spieth and Tiger finished up well in advance of the broadcast. Thanks to the low scores, NBC will now get the boon that comes with Tiger playing during the final round broadcast of one of the biggest events of the year.

Just because they’re playing in the coverage window with a late tee time, however, does not mean Spieth and Tiger are truly in contention. Webb Simpson is running away with this thing and is seven shots clear of second-place Danny Lee. No player has ever blown a 54-hole lead that big in PGA Tour history. Tiger and Spieth are 11 shots back so it will take a miracle and a lot of help for this thing to be close down the stretch on Sunday night.

Tottenham vs Leicester City

Can Spurs help Harry Kane on his way to a third consecutive Premier League Golden Boot award?
Tottenham will clash with Leicester on Sunday with their season essentially finished having booked a spot in next season’s Champions League group stages on Wednesday with a win against Newcastle.

Leicester picked up their first win in six games against Arsenal on Wednesday night after a 3-1 success, but they are stuck in mid-table with nothing to play for.

Spurs will come into this match with the sole intention of helping Harry Kane to win a third Golden Boot, with the striker trailing Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah by three goals, with one game to play.

Spurs will be feeding Harry Kane as much as possible as it is his last chance to chase down Mo Salah in the race for the Golden Boot.

The striker needs a hat-trick against Leicester – a feat which he performed last season when he scored four in a 6-1 win at the King Power Stadium – to join Salah on 31 goals.

Kane could not have wished for a better opposition to come up against in his pursuit of the accolade as he has scored more goals against Leicester than any other club. Kane also previously spent half a season on loan at Leicester where he scored only twice in 13 appearances.

Manchester United vs Watford

After seven games of the 2017-18 Premier League season, Manchester United were tied on 19 points with Manchester City at the top of the table, second only by virtue of having scored one less goal.

With one match remaining of the campaign, the Red Devils are still second, but they are 19 points behind champions City having scored 38 fewer goals.

It is set to be United’s highest finish and best points and goals tally since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, but the gulf to the Sky Blues is gaping.

Jose Mourinho will be eager for his side to end their season with three more points against Watford.

In the final game of the season, the Red Devils take on the Hornets hoping to claim a win in preparation for the FA Cup final
Manchester United play their final Premier League game of the season against Watford at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho’s team have now secured a second-place finish in the Premier League following their 0-0 draw with West Ham on Thursday night.

Watford sit mid-table, having won 11 games this season, although their victory over Newcastle last weekend ended a run of seven matches without a win.

In the two clubs’ last encounter, the Red Devils won 4-2 at Vicarage Road in late November and they will hoping to repeat that at Old Trafford.

Spanish Grand Prix 2018

Sebastian Vettel will continue his battle with Mercedes pair Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas when the 2018 Formula One Spanish Grand Prix gets under way at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmelo on Sunday.

Hamilton got Mercedes’ first win of the season in Azerbaijan last time out. It was a significant psychological fillip for Mercedes since Vettel and Ferrari have looked particularly impressive early on.

Hamilton has an outstanding record in Barcelona, with the Formula 1 official website noting how the 33-year-old “hasn’t been off the front row here since his final year for McLaren in 2012, when he took top spot in qualifying only to be excluded for having insufficient fuel.”

The same source detailed how Vettel has never had pole position for this race. Of course, not being on pole didn’t stop the German from winning in Barcelona back in 2011.

Vettel has been good enough to win in Bahrain and Australia already this season.

On a day that Lewis Hamilton obliterated the Barcelona track record not once but twice en route to a record-extending 74th pole position, the world champion could hardly hide his frustration at the prospect of Formula One cars lapping up to one-and-a-half seconds slower from next season.

“We always want to push the boundaries, and one of the exciting things this year is that we are breaking records,” said Hamilton, fresh from an exhilarating lap of 1min 16.173sec, a full three seconds faster than the time he set in claiming pole here at the Circuit de Catalunya 12 months ago. “So, in future, we should be at least as fast as we have been this year.”

Except, in the type of volte face for which F1 is notorious, the astonishing speed displayed by Hamilton in his Mercedes yesterday is soon to be reined back. The expected loss of performance in 2019 is the result of aerodynamic work by F1’s technical brains trust, led by Ross Brawn, to promote more overtaking and better wheel-to-wheel racing. But the constant changes of heart by the sport’s hierarchy is serving only to sow confusion among the drivers.

Sebastian Vettel, who seeks to bridge a four-point deficit to Hamilton in today’s Spanish Grand Prix, responded to the indecision with contempt. “I find it comical,” the German said. “Before, we said, ‘The cars are too slow, let’s put more aero on them, make them wider and more spectacular.’ The feedback from the drivers was, ‘Thank you very much. It’s more challenging and you’re seeing us more exhausted.’ But now we want to make them slower again. It’s a bit cruising to America and changing direction 100 times.”

Hamilton, chiming in, asked his title rival: “Is it the same people making the decisions? The same group?” The answer here was no, given that Brawn has only recently embarked on his quest to shake up the action on track, but Vettel was undeterred. “You should ask us what we need to overtake,” he said, firmly. “We are the ones driving. This is not to say that we know everything, but we know about how the cars feel and about their limitations. And yet we are never really asked.”

Eurovision Song Contest 2018

It was a night filled with drama, including the tense moment a man invaded the stage during UK entry SuRie’s performance and grabbed the mic to shout about “Nazis” and the “UK media”.

After the night’s jury votes, it seemed the competition was down to two of the night’s charmers, Austria’s Cesár Sampson and Sweden’s Benjamin Ingrosso.

However, the public vote changed all that: the favour shifted first to Israel and Cyprus’ Eleni Foureira, with Netta finally triumphing with her bright, bonkers pop anthem ‘Toy’.

“Thank you for celebrating diversity. Thank you! I love my country! See you in Jerusalem!” she said in her acceptance speech, as a member of the crowd waved their stuffed Pikachu in triumph, referencing the song’s lyrics.

Liverpool vs Brighton

Liverpool need just a point to secure a Champions League spot for next season at home to Brighton, while Mohamed Salah chases yet another record
Liverpool will host Brighton on Sunday knowing they need just a point to secure a spot in the Champions League next season. A draw will be enough to see off fifth-placed Chelsea for the final place after Tottenham won over Newcastle in midweek.

The fixture will also be another chance for Mohamed Salah to make another landmark for the Reds. If he is to net against Chris Hughton’s side, he will break the record for scoring the most goals in a 38-game season – surpassing the likes of Alan Shearer, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez who are all currently on 31.

Jurgen Klopp will likely field a full-strength team for his final Premier League fixture as he seeks to confirm a spot in the Champions League next season – with plenty of time to prepare for the final against Real Madrid on May 26.

Brighton sit comfortably in 14th place with 40 points and will not be looking to replicate the 5-1 hammering at the Amex Stadium when they hosted the Reds earlier in the season.

Newcastle United vs Chelsea

Chelsea’s last hope of securing a UEFA Champions League qualifying spot for next season rests on Sunday’s Premier League curtain call away to Newcastle United, where Magpies manager Rafa Benitez will look to stop his old team taking fourth.

The fifth-placed Blues travel to St James’ Park with two points between them and Liverpool in fourth, and three points are needed in the north-east if Antonio Conte’s men are to have any chance of securing a top-four finish.

Benitez’s side have lost their last four in succession, but Chelsea also need Liverpool to drop points in their home clash against Brighton & Hove Albion to have any chance at stealing in at the last minute.

Chelsea are already assured of a place in next season’s UEFA Europa League, but they won’t want to settle for a spot in Europe’s secondary club contest while the slightest chance is there to make it to the big show.

Read on for all the latest team news ahead of Sunday’s season-ending showcase, where Chelsea stand as one of the few top-flight teams with something substantial left to fight for.

Team News

One positive piece of news for Chelsea is Thibaut Courtois looks to have recovered from a back injury and is in contention to start against Newcastle on Sunday.

Vaishali Bhardwaj of the Evening Standard reported Courtois was in training Friday after missing Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town, and PhysioRoom.com provided an update on Chelsea’s other injury concerns:

David Luiz hasn’t featured since the centre-back was injured in February, and there’s a possibility he’s now played his last game for the club, with his place under Conte in doubt ahead of a key transfer window.

As for Newcastle, injury analyst Ben Dinnery broke down their squad issues, with the enforced absence of on-loan wide technician Kenedy a particular loss:

Nunes vs Pennington

The UFC visits Brazil on Saturday for UFC 224. In the main event of the pay-per-view card, Amanda Nunes puts her UFC women’s bantamweight title on the line against Raquel Pennington.

In the co-main event, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza faces Kelvin Gastelum. The winner of that bout hopes to take one step closer to a middleweight title fight.

UFC 224 takes place at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Following the main event, the UFC will hold the post-fight press conference for the event. The title fight competitors, as well as other main card fighters, are expected to spend some time with the media after the headline bout ends.

The post-fight press conference is expected to begin around 1:15 a.m. ET.

UFC once again heads to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday as the promotion presents UFC 224 featuring a women’s bantamweight championship bout as the main event.

Women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes will look to defend her title successfully for the third consecutive outing when she takes on No. 2-ranked contender Raquel Pennington. Nunes (15-4) earned her last victory to retain her championship at UFC 215 in September 2017 when she defeated Valentina Shevchenko via unanimous decision. If Pennington (9-5) is going to shock the world with a title win, she’ll have to do so by shaking off some rust inside the Octagon. Pennington’s last UFC appearance was at UFC 205 in November 2016, but she did earn a huge win in that bout, a three-round unanimous decision victory over former champion Miesha Tate.
